In what is a first for libraries in the State of Hawaii, all public libraries, all public and many private schools, all community colleges and university campuses, and several private colleges, will have unlimited access to twenty of the largest full text reference databases available today.

With this project in place, Hawaiian citizens of all ages can easily search and access full text materials from literally thousands of the finest magazines, journals, newspapers, reference books, biographies, encyclopedias, almanacs, and much, much more. The 20 EBSCOhostÒ databases made available through this state initiative cover virtually every subject area for children, young adults, adults, college researchers and other information seekers. Subject areas covered range greatly in scope to include: accounting, advertising, allied health, artificial intelligence, arts & literature, chemistry, computer sciences, consumer health, consumer-based services, cybernetics, economics, education, engineering, ethnic studies, fiction services, finance, gay & lesbian studies, gender studies, general reference, humanities, information systems, international business, language & linguistics, management, marketing, mechanics, medical sciences, military studies, nursing, parenting, philosophy, physics, programming, robotics, social sciences, software, theology and many others.

Virginia Lowell, State Librarian for Hawaii, commented, “We have been able to build this statewide consortium by concentrating on the shared goal of all types of libraries, which is to connect people to information, wherever they are, whenever they need it.”
