The Athens Access Management System controls access to Web-based subscription services through account management features. Athens has been in active use since 1996 in the UK Higher Education community, providing access to many centrally-funded Web-based services. It is now the de-facto standard in the community for access management, and data service providers now find it difficult to sell into this community without Athens security.

As an Athens-compliant data service provider, MetaPress end users can access all their resources through a globally accepted sign on feature.
