For over forty years, Cinahl Information Systems has been the leading provider of bibliographic indexing for nursing and allied health literature. Although quality of content has always stood at the forefront of the company's vision, Cinahl has nonetheless endeavored to steadily increase the quantity of records in the database over time. This ongoing effort has recently resulted in Cinahl reaching a major milestone in the history of the company - The CINAHL® Database now contains over one million records.

While Cinahl is now part of the larger EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) family of products and services (since being acquired in 2003), the original structure of the organization has not changed. In fact, the company continues to maintain their existing operation in Glendale, California, which has allowed for the uninterrupted development of the CINAHL database. Such progress is further enhanced by the additional resources and support provided to Cinahl through their affiliation with EBSCO.

According to June Levy, Managing Director of Cinahl Information Systems, "The Cinahl staff was very excited to reach the one million record mark for the CINAHL database on November 5, 2004. It took eighteen years (1982 to 1999) to reach half a million records and less than five years (2000 to November 2004) to reach the second half!"

In addition to reaching the one million record milestone, CINAHL has recently undergone other noteworthy developments. For example, CINAHL now includes access to the complementary database PreCINAHL™, which provides current awareness of new journal articles, and includes a rotating file of limited bibliographic information (no subject indexing) that is available to researchers only while these articles are being indexed. Once the bibliographic records are complete, they are added to the CINAHL database and removed from PreCINAHL. This complementary database is available only through the EBSCOhost® interface.
