With its recent acquisition of Cinahl Information Systems and the CINAHL database, EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) is working diligently to enhance the EBSCOhost implementation of this renowned database with new, unique features.

Availability of PreCINAHL
As a complementary component to CINAHL, and uniquely available from EBSCO, customers using the database via EBSCOhost soon will gain access to PreCINAHL. PreCINAHL is intended to provide current awareness of new journal articles, and includes a rotating file of limited bibliographic information (no subject indexing), which is available to researchers in this form only for the time when these articles are being assigned additional indexing. This enables users to gain access to article citations that otherwise would not be available. Once the bibliographic records are complete, they are added to the CINAHL database and removed from PreCINAHL. EBSCOhost will allow customers to search simultaneously CINAHL and PreCINAHL.

Searchable Citations (a.k.a. - Reference Linking)
Another CINAHL feature to be available via the EBSCOhost interface is that of Searchable Citations. Searchable Citations provide a powerful means for extending research by allowing users to locate additional information related to an article of interest. Also known as Reference Linking, this functionality lets users link directly from a particular article to other articles cited in the bibliography of the original article. It also allows users to link directly from a particular article to other articles in the database that cite the original article. The basic principal associated with this type of linking considers that if a particular article is of interest to a researcher, then the articles cited by that same article, or that cite the article, are often of value as well. Searchable Citations will be available via EBSCOhost for more than 800 journals indexed in CINAHL.

EBSCO SmartLinks
As is the case with all EBSCOhost databases, the EBSCOhost implementation of CINAHL allows for the utilization of EBSCO SmartLinks. This technology lets users link from citation-only results in CINAHL, to the corresponding full text of articles located in a library's collection of other EBSCOhost databases, EBSCOhost Electronic Journals, or journals available through CrossRef member publishers to which a library may subscribe. As of today, EBSCOhost full text databases provide full text for over 400 journals indexed in CINAHL.
