1930 Elton B. Stephens sold magazines to earn money for college.
1936 Elton B. Stephens graduated from The University of Alabama School of Law and decided managing the sale of magazines was more profitable than a law career.
1944 Elton B. Stephens and his wife, Alys Robinson Stephens, formed a partnership to sell magazines, personalized binders and racks to the U.S. Armed Forces under the name of Military Service Company.
1946 Metal Fabricators and Finishers (currently Vulcan Industries) was formed to manufacture display stands.
1947 Vulcan Binder & Cover (now Vulcan Information Packaging) was formed to manufacture binders.
1948 Hartsfield Printing Company (currently EBSCO Media) was purchased to supply personalized stationery to the armed forces.
1954 Vulcan Enterprises (currently EBSCO Professional Partnership Group) started to provide community-related messages for binder covers.
