Bringing Big Business from Alaska to Alabama:
S.S. Nesbitt & Co. insures Tyonek Native Corporation, a company based in Tyonek, Alaska.

S.S. Nesbitt & Co. (SSN) Producers Scott Weaver and Brad McMurray are proving themselves specialists when it comes to insuring government contract business. These two men recently sold the Native-owned Alaskan company Tyonek Native Corporation a full worker's compensation package from their office in Huntsville, Ala. "The Tyonek policy shows that we have unlimited capabilities and an expertise when it comes to technical and government contract work," said Weaver, vice president of SSN.

Coverage is Critical

Tyonek is growing exponentially through its work in the oil and military industries. As Department of Defense contracts with Huntsville-based firms grew, Tyonek decided to open a facility in the Deep South. The manufacturing, engineering, aircraft maintenance and IT services Tyonek offers were ideal for expanding to a city that is home to major technology, space and defense industries.

Tyonek’s business extends across the country and potentially overseas, making their insurance needs broad and complex. Unfortunately, few insurance carriers are willing and able to take on the liability—enter, SSN, an EBSCO-owned risk management company that maintains relationship with some of the country’s largest, well-respected insurance carriers.

Insuring Trust

Because Weaver had previous experience working with Tyonek, having provided them with a sound auto insurance policy about three years ago, SSN began bidding for the contract.
However, Weaver’s past experience proved that convincing insurance carriers to take on such a broad company is challenging. It would take a large carrier and Tyonek’s established trust in SSN for them to land the account.

Weaver approached fellow producer Brad McMurray, who had worked a great deal with Liberty Mutual and had earned their trust over the years. As a team, the two men were able to provide a very competitive worker's compensation policy to Tyonek through Liberty Mutual, winning the business away from an Alaskan insurance broker.

Going Global

The increase in military contracts in the Huntsville area over the past couple of years has led Weaver and SSN to make insuring contractors a key strategy in the Huntsville office, and gaining the Tyonek account shows that strategy is bearing fruit. "The acquisition of this policy," said Weaver, "solidifies us as one of the leaders in government contract business from Alabama to Iraq."
