Tim Jones Builds Lasting Relationship Between S.S. Nesbitt and ABC

On Oct. 1, 2006, S.S. Nesbitt & Co., Inc., in conjunction with Penn National Insurance, formed a partnership with the Alabama chapter of Associated Business Contractors, Inc. (ABC). Originally, S. S. Nesbitt hoped to bring 12 new members to ABC during the first year of partnership. In less than one year, however, the relationship has paid off more than twice the original goal and brought 30 new members to ABC.

ABC was looking to partner with an insurance provider and offer incentives on insurance to ABC members. “Forming a partnership of this type requires a lot of trust in each other, as a poor partnership will benefit no one,” explained Tim Jones, senior vice president of S.S. Nesbitt. “ABC saw a potential within Penn National to gain additional members, thereby growing their business, and Penn National saw a chance to grow their customer base by tapping into ABC members. In the end, everyone wins.”

ABC serves both large and small construction companies. “Membership with the ABC provides larger companies with financial returns and incentives,” Jones said. “Smaller companies benefit from the training and education programs offered by the ABC. Many of these smaller companies do not have the resources or means to offer programs like management seminars, OSHA classes and Hispanic training services. Membership with the ABC gives them the opportunity.”

ABC and S.S. Nesbitt were brought together through the connections Jones has with Penn National Insurance and LMJ Insurance, a company recently acquired by S.S. Nesbitt, which Jones founded and operated for 12 years.

Jones’ pre-existing relationship and well-established standing in the industry has contributed greatly to the successful partnership of S.S. Nesbitt and ABC.

“I think we are building something that will last a long time,” he said. “In the end, it was taking advantage of relationships with the companies that made this work, and what will continue to make it work. When you partner with another company like this, it is a real leap of faith. Because of the connections, ABC took the plunge and since has found significant success.”

S.S. Nesbitt is a Birmingham, Ala.-based insurance provider that merged with EBSCO’s insurance company R.A. Brown in 2001. S.S. Nesbitt’s commercial clients include businesses in construction, manufacturing, aviation, food services and professional services.  Since the acquisition, S.S. Nesbitt has grown to become one of the leading independent agencies in Birmingham.
