EBSCO Publishing acquires publisher Salem Press to give clients access to added information

EBSCO Publishing (EP) continues to grow, with the latest acquisition, Salem Press, completed on Jan. 31. Salem Press, a high-quality book publisher, and EP have had a long-standing relationship. Salem Press content has been a mainstay in many EBSCO database offerings for many years. Magill Book Reviews, Magill’s Choice: Shakespeare and Magill’s Choice: 100 Masters of Mystery and Detective Fiction, as well as the Masterplot series are just a few Salem Press products that are included in EBSCO’s database offerings.

The deal is the result of a natural synergy that exists with book content and database subjects. Salem Press is a high-quality publisher of material in areas where EBSCOhost® provides leading resources, including literature, history and consumer health.

As Salem Press continues to expand its reach into these and other subject areas (e.g., science), content will continue to enrich EBSCOhost databases. For example, the next edition of the Masterplot series is expected to become available in 2010. Going forward, EBSCO will bring digitization, indexing and platform expertise to the Salem Press content — providing the means for a larger reach with this content.

EP Vice President of Business Development Mark Herrick, said, “We are very excited about combining content from the leading reference publisher with EP’s massive sales capabilities. Salem Press’ reputation for high-quality content and astute subject selection will continue to generate profits from their print product line while adding substantial value to relevant databases on EBSCOhost.”

Since 1949, Salem Press has been the publisher of reference works on literature, history and biography, the social sciences and the sciences suitable for adult and young adult readers spanning all educational venues. Reference materials are both printed and electronic. The company distributes its work to college, school and public libraries.

Salem Press’s Sales and Service departments are located in Hackensack, N.J., and its editorial office is located in Pasadena, Calif.
