Knight & Hale nabs a new kind of trophy bird

At the 2007 American Inhouse Design Awards, sponsored by Graphic Design USA magazine, Knight & Hale was recognized for their package design for the new Signature Series glass friction call.

“The Signature Series is a high-end call, signed by Harold Knight and David Hale,” explained Lawrence Taylor, public relations manager for PRADCO-Hunting. “It could easily become a collector’s piece and sit on your mantle. But don’t mistake it for simply a show piece; this call is made of high-quality materials that put out a great sound. When not on the mantle, it will find its way to the woods and do a superb job of bringing in the turkeys.”

Designing packaging for such a special call engraved with the faces of Harold Knight and David Hale was not a task to be taken lightly. Hunting accessories usually come in brightly colored packaging, but this call required something different, something extraordinary. After some brainstorming, several unique designs were presented to a focus group of real hunters. Overwhelmingly, they preferred the white and gold design.

 

“With its collector’s potential, we feel this design nailed the feeling we were going for with this call,” Taylor said. In a sea of bright colors, a white and gold insert wraps the call in the elegance it deserves, while simply focusing attention on the piece itself. It is then packaged in a hard, clear plastic box that beautifully displays both the signatures of Harold Knight and David Hale on the front and their faces on the back.

The packaging was submitted to the American Inhouse Design Awards where it competed with 400,000 other designs, only 500 of which would be selected as winners across 50 categories.
