Keeping Pace with Serial Costs: The 2019 Periodicals Price Survey

The recent article in Library Journal, “Deal or No Deal: Periodicals Price Survey 2019,” has a lot to say about serials price inflation and open access. Here is what we think is important.

While big deals remain the status quo for academic libraries, there is pressure on publishers to move more quickly to Open Access (OA) and the Library Journal article addresses the unintended consequences of such a move.

Library budgets are still not keeping pace with serials price inflation and Open Access is promising to bring major reform to academic publishing. OA is now a worldwide initiative and it appeals to a library community dealing with flat budgets and reduced higher education funding. OA changes how scholarship is used, disseminated and evaluated, and brings different business models that could possibly challenge the future quality of content.
