With the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday coming up in the U.S., EBSCO’s Todd Conly takes a look at some audiobooks you can listen to as you travel to your destination.
Driving six hours to Grandma’s house for your next holiday? Family road trips are probably not the highlight of your vacation. When I was growing up we didn’t have DVD players in cars, iPods, iPads or smartphones. The best my parents could do was turn the AM dial to “Love Will Keep Us Together” by Captain & Tennille or the Partridge Family, “I Think I Love You” in order to entertain us, as I would try to sing the words with my Dad to pass the time. The only other option was trying to read a book in the car, but after a few minutes car sickness would set in which promoted a quick revisit to the 70’stastic tunes. Oh, how I wished we knew about audiobooks when I was growing up.
Today’s digital audiobooks are a great way to keep kids entertained and can be enjoyed by the entire family via a mobile device through your car's Bluetooth system, making even the longest car rides bearable. Audiobooks are hugely popular nowadays with more and more publishers adding audiobook titles, expanding the shelf life of books and providing another format for busy, on-the-go listeners.
Looking for the right audiobook to appeal to the entire family as well as different age groups? With more than 60,000 titles to choose from, the EBSCO Collection Development team has put together a list of suggested titles, broken down by grade appropriate content, to enjoy on your trip and to stop the “Are we there yet?” questions.
