EBSCO Information Services Announces Winner of the 2017 EBSCO Charleston Conference Scholarship

~ Michael Wells of Northern Kentucky University Earns EBSCO Scholarship ~

IPSWICH, Mass. — October 18, 2017 — EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) announces that Michael Wells, the Systems Librarian for W. Frank Steely Library at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Ky., is the winner of the 2017 EBSCO Charleston Conference Scholarship. The scholarship provides money to defray the costs of Wells attending the 36th Annual Charleston Conference, which will take place in Charleston, South Carolina from November 6 – November 10, 2017.

Scholarship applicants were asked to submit a short essay in which they described the top three juggernauts that librarians need to address to position libraries to succeed and to expand their position within their institutions. Wells’ essay outlines the ways in which librarians can evolve and define their future by being the bridge between technology and their patrons.

"I am incredibly honored to have been selected for this award and to be able to attend my first Charleston Conference,” says Michael Wells. “On a daily basis, EBSCO has been a valuable partner for our library and it is very humbling to win an award they sponsor. In my essay, I wanted to really focus on librarianship as a proactive and not a reactive profession, where we provide multifaceted value to the communities we serve. I also wanted to express the value of partnership in creating success, both internally and externally.  This is a dynamic profession that changes every day, and I am very eager to learn from others at the conference."

EBSCO has sponsored a Charleston Conference scholarship for the past six years. Funds are used by the winning librarian for conference registration and related expenses. Judges for this year’s scholarship were Barbara Albee, EBSCO Information Services; Katina Strauch, Charleston Conference; and Rick Anderson, University of Utah.
