Abstract
This article focuses on the development and impact of a hospital-based community garden at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center as part of its community health needs assessment (CHNA) efforts to address chronic diseases linked to poor diets. Established in 2014, the garden supports diverse programs including charitable produce donations, a Food as Medicine initiative led by medical students, a Prescription Produce program for at-risk patients, horticulture therapy for eating disorder recovery, and research on skin cancer prevention. The garden also promotes inclusivity, environmental sustainability, and nutrition education, serving community members, hospital staff, and patients. This case study illustrates how nonprofit hospitals can leverage community gardens to meet CHNA goals, foster local health promotion, and enhance resilience through local food production.
