Therapeutic applications of garlic and turmeric for the diabetic wound healing in mice.

Abstract

This article focuses on the evaluation of natural biomaterials—garlic (Allium sativum), turmeric (Curcuma longa), and fibroin extracts—for accelerating wound healing in diabetic mice. Diabetes was induced in Swiss albino mice using alloxan monohydrate, and wounds were treated with individual extracts and their combinations, with healing assessed by percent wound contraction, histological analysis, and serum biomarkers including pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8), matrix metalloproteinases (MMP2, MMP7, MMP9), and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs). The combination of garlic (150 mg/ml), turmeric (100 mg/ml), and fibroin (50 mg/ml) demonstrated the fastest wound closure (12 days) and highest wound contraction (97.3%), along with increased fibroblast proliferation, collagen deposition, and angiogenesis, and significant modulation of inflammatory and remodeling biomarkers compared to diabetic controls and a standard ointment (polyfax). These findings suggest that the combined use of these natural extracts may offer an effective and less toxic alternative for treating chronic diabetic wounds.
