Abstract

The article focuses on the unveiling of a new State Historical Society marker identifying the location and history of the Grand Village of the Kickapoo Tribe in historic Alcicall County, Illinois. The dedication ceremony, held in West Park near LeRoy, Illinois, also celebrated the preservation of a Kickapoo Memorial Boulder and the refurbishment of a Kickapoo stockade marker. The Illinois State Historical Society emphasized the importance of reevaluating historical markers to better incorporate Native American narratives and expand understanding of Native American history in Illinois. Founded in 1899, the Society aims to foster awareness, research, preservation, and recognition of Illinois history, including significant Native American sites and stories, through collaboration with tribes and communities.
