Abstract

This article presents a pilot art-based study investigating the effects of working with wet soil on children aged 8–13 with sensory regulation disorders (SRDs). Conducted by two graduate art therapy students under faculty supervision at Ono Academic College, Israel, the study involved art-making, observation, group discussion, creative researcher responses, and video analysis. Findings reveal two main themes: the grounding and self-regulating qualities of tactile engagement with wet soil, and the material’s raw, sensory-evocative nature that fosters embodied, nonverbal expression. The study suggests that integrating natural materials like wet soil in art therapy may enhance focus, relaxation, and sensory regulation in children with SRDs, highlighting the potential for nature-based creative therapies to support emotional and sensory development.
