Abstract
The article focuses on the discovery and significance of a 1.5-inch clay figurine found at the 12,000-year-old Natufian village site of Nahal Ein Gev II in northern Israel. This figurine uniquely depicts a crouching woman with a goose on her back, representing the earliest known three-dimensional portrayal of a human-animal relationship and possibly reflecting spiritual or ritual beliefs of the Natufians. The Natufians, hunter-gatherers who settled in larger communities before the advent of farming, demonstrated advanced social and cultural practices, including establishing one of the earliest cemeteries with plastered burials. The figurine’s detailed depiction of a mating goose suggests symbolic or animistic significance, potentially indicating shamanistic connections between humans and animal spirits.
