Abstract
The article focuses on two studies related to beef cattle production. The first study from Utah State University and Renaissance Ag evaluated the effects of including sprouted barley in the diets of growing Angus steers on body weight, ribeye area (REA), and ribeye fat thickness (REFT). Results showed no negative impact on growth performance, with a tendency for increased REA at the 20% sprouted barley inclusion level, though further research on economic viability is needed. The second study from Mississippi State University and Zinpro Corporation examined consumption patterns of a chlortetracycline (CTC)-containing free-choice supplement in gestating beef cows on pasture using a SmartFeed unit. Findings revealed variable supplement intake influenced by individual behavior, with feeding events clustered rather than random, highlighting challenges in consistent medication delivery in extensive grazing systems.
