High or low volume beetroot juice supplementation might positively affect physical capacity and isokinetic muscle function in power athletes.

Abstract

This article investigates the effects of beetroot juice supplementation on physical capacity and isokinetic muscle function in 13 male power athletes from sports such as taekwondo, badminton, and kendo. Participants consumed placebo, low-volume (70 ml), and high-volume (140 ml) beetroot juice in a randomized, blinded design, with assessments including the Harvard step test, 20 m sprint, Wingate anaerobic test, blood lactate analysis, and isokinetic knee and trunk muscle tests. Results showed that beetroot juice intake significantly improved 20 m sprint speed and isokinetic muscular endurance of the knee extensors but did not affect aerobic capacity, anaerobic power, blood lactate concentration, or isokinetic muscle strength. The study concludes that consuming more than 70 ml of beetroot juice before performance may enhance speed and muscular endurance in power athletes, while recommending further research to determine optimal dosing and intake duration.
