Abstract

This study focuses on the development and evaluation of alginate microparticles containing berberine (BBR) and fluconazole (FLU) incorporated into vaginal cream and artificial saliva formulations for antifungal activity against Candida albicans. The microparticles, produced by spray-drying, demonstrated synergistic antifungal effects with reduced cytotoxicity compared to free drugs, effectively inhibiting both planktonic growth and biofilm formation of C. albicans. Both formulations showed good physicochemical stability, appropriate organoleptic properties, and significant antifungal activity in vitro, suggesting their potential as therapeutic options for vaginal and oral candidiasis.
