Abstract

This article investigates factors associated with anxiety, depression, and stress among farmers and farm residents in Western Australia (WA). Using an online survey of 124 participants, the study found that higher mental health symptoms were linked to financial and external trade pressures, family and relationship tensions, avoidant coping strategies (such as self-blame and disengagement), lack of succession planning, and consideration of selling the farm. Protective factors included social support and a strong sense of community belonging. The findings emphasize the need for targeted clinical and community interventions that enhance social connectedness and support succession planning to improve mental health outcomes in WA farming populations.
