Abstract

The article discusses the critical state of global fisheries, which are vital for employment and nutrition for billions of people, and the impact of harmful subsidies that promote overfishing. The World Trade Organization's Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies (Fish 1), effective from September 2025, aims to address these issues by prohibiting subsidies for illegal and unsustainable fishing practices. While the agreement establishes a framework for accountability and transparency, challenges such as a sunset clause requiring further action by 2029 and compliance gaps in developing countries remain. Effective implementation and support for the agreement are essential to protect vulnerable fisheries and ensure sustainable fishing practices globally. [Extracted from the article]
