Abstract
This article focuses on the synergistic antimicrobial effects of thiamine dilauryl sulphate (TDS), a vitamin B1 derivative used as a food additive, combined with the heartwood extract of the Indian kino tree (Pterocarpus marsupium). The combination demonstrated enhanced inhibitory activity against various food spoilage microorganisms, including Gram-positive bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis and Lactococcus lactis, and fungi like Candida albicans. Mechanistically, the combination induced oxidative stress via increased reactive oxygen species production and inhibited drug efflux pumps in the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, contributing to its antifungal effects. Given its low toxicity and environmental impact, this combination shows promise for application as a preservative in food and industrial products to reduce microbial spoilage and food loss.
