Abstract
The article focuses on the role of the SHORT AND CROOKED AWN (SCA) gene in the development of awns in barley, a member of the grass family. Awns are bristle-like structures that extend from the lemma and are believed to contribute to various ecological functions, including seed dispersal and predator deterrence. The study identifies mutations in the SCA gene that lead to short and malformed awns, revealing its critical role in regulating gene expression related to awn growth. The findings suggest that SCA operates as an epigenetic repressor, influencing the expression of various transcription factors and maintaining the identity of floral organs while affecting awn morphology.
