Abstract
This article focuses on the effectiveness of community-based traditional Chinese exercises (CTCEs), specifically tai chi and qigong, in reducing sleep disturbance among community-dwelling older adults. A meta-analysis of 13 randomized controlled trials involving 1,117 participants found that CTCEs significantly improved sleep quality compared to passive or active controls, with qigong showing a slightly larger but not statistically different effect than tai chi. Despite these positive findings, the overall certainty of evidence was rated very low due to high risk of bias, heterogeneity among studies, and reliance on self-reported sleep measures. The study highlights CTCEs as culturally adaptable, nonpharmacological interventions suitable for integration into community health programs, emphasizing the need for standardized protocols, instructor training, and culturally sensitive delivery to enhance safety and accessibility.
