The effects of nano- and microplastic ingestion on the survivorship and reproduction of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae).

Abstract
This article examines the effects of microplastic (MP) and nanoplastic (NP) ingestion on the survivorship and reproduction of two medically important mosquito species, *Aedes aegypti* and *Aedes albopictus*. The study found that ingestion of MPs and NPs at environmentally relevant and high concentrations generally had little impact on larval survivorship, adult emergence, adult longevity, and fecundity, with the exception of a reduction in pupal survivorship in *Ae. aegypti* associated with 0.03 µm NPs. Additionally, variations in MP polymer type and shape did not significantly affect mosquito fitness. These findings suggest that while MPs and NPs accumulate in mosquito larvae, their ingestion under laboratory conditions does not markedly impair mosquito life history traits, though further research is needed to assess potential impacts on pathogen transmission and environmental dispersal.
