Abstract
This article focuses on the widespread public misunderstanding of shark conservation threats and solutions, highlighting how misinformation impedes effective policy and management. It explains that overfishing, rather than shark finning alone, is the primary threat to sharks and their relatives, with sustainable fisheries management recognized by most experts as the preferred conservation approach. The article identifies popular media, social media, and some activist groups as sources of misinformation that emphasize shark finning disproportionately, leading to suboptimal policies and conflicts among stakeholders. It advocates for increased engagement by scientific experts in public communication to correct misconceptions and promote evidence-based conservation strategies.
