Optimizing PNF stretching strategies for hamstring flexibility: Comparing end- and mid-range stretching effects by muscle tightness severity.

Abstract
This article focuses on comparing the effects of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching performed at mid-range (50% maximal range of motion, MaxROM) versus end-range (100% MaxROM) joint positions on hamstring flexibility, considering different levels of hamstring tightness. The study found that individuals with severe hamstring tightness experienced significant flexibility improvements after PNF stretching at both mid- and end-range positions, while those with mild tightness showed significant gains only at end-range. These results suggest that mid-range PNF stretching may be an effective alternative for patients with severe tightness who cannot tolerate maximal stretch positions due to discomfort or pain. The findings emphasize the importance of tailoring stretching interventions to the initial severity of hamstring tightness to optimize clinical outcomes.
