Abstract
This article evaluates the effectiveness of pre-laboratory (pre-lab) dissection videos with embedded quizzes as supplemental learning tools for first-year veterinary students studying canine anatomy at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine (KSU CVM). Analysis of Fall 2022 data from 120 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students revealed positive, statistically significant correlations between the number of videos viewed and practical exam scores, particularly for lower quartile students, where video engagement predicted 21% of exam score variation and improved performance by 14.6%. Additionally, higher quiz scores correlated with better exam outcomes, and qualitative thematic analysis indicated that students perceived the videos as valuable for lab preparation, study, confidence building, and comprehension. While correlations were weak and causality was not established, the study suggests that accessible, low-cost video resources with quizzes can enhance veterinary anatomy education and support diverse learning styles, especially benefiting students at risk of lower academic performance.
