Abstract

The article focuses on the effects of aging on the colon structure in male albino rats, with particular attention to Interstitial Cells of Cajal (ICCs). Using light and electron microscopy alongside immunohistochemical staining, the study found that aging leads to significant histological alterations, including mucosal disruption, increased collagen deposition, decreased goblet cells, and ultrastructural changes in ICCs and telocytes. These age-related changes in the colon’s cellular and extracellular components may contribute to gastrointestinal motility disorders commonly observed in elderly populations. The findings provide insight into the cellular basis of age-associated gastrointestinal dysfunction.
