Abstract
This article evaluates the performance of a novel software-based automatic exposure control (AEC) system integrated into a wireless portable X-ray device for anteroposterior chest radiography. The study found that this AEC system significantly reduced radiation dose, measured by dose-area product (DAP) and exposure index (EI), compared to manual fixed-dose controls, while maintaining or improving subjective image quality, especially in low-exposure images. The AEC operates by using a scout shot and algorithmic lung segmentation to optimize exposure time in a wireless environment, addressing prior technical challenges of AEC use in portable systems. Although limited to chest imaging and a single institution, the findings suggest that software-based AEC in portable X-ray units can enhance radiation dose management and image consistency.
