Abstract
The article focuses on a systematic review evaluating the impact of non-functional overreaching (NFOR) and overtraining syndrome (OTS) on the psychological and cognitive functioning of elite athletes. Conducted by researchers from the University of Padova, the review analyzed 11 studies involving 461 participants, revealing that elite athletes experiencing NFOR or OTS exhibited alterations in mood, stress, burnout, and fatigue. However, the evidence regarding psychological well-being was limited and varied, while cognitive impairments were primarily associated with OTS. The research underscores the need for targeted strategies to support the mental health and performance of elite athletes. [Extracted from the article]
