Abstract

The article focuses on the challenges and strategic considerations faced by The Goat Trust, a charitable organization in India dedicated to small livestock management for rural livelihood development, amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the return of migrant workers. Founded in 2008, The Goat Trust supports predominantly women goat farmers through training, veterinary services, and innovative initiatives like the Bakri Bank (Goat Bank), which enables impoverished farmers to rent goats. The pandemic intensified economic hardships, prompting the organization’s founder to consider digitizing the traditional goat trade via an online platform to enhance transparency, increase women’s participation, and create sustainable local economies. While this digital shift offers benefits such as disease control and fair pricing, challenges include limited infrastructure, resistance from traditional intermediaries, and ensuring farmer adoption in resource-poor settings. The case highlights the potential role of social enterprises in integrating technology to revitalize rural economies during and after the pandemic.
