A new approach to evaluate obstructive sleep apnea according to body mass index using breathing diagram.

Abstract
This article focuses on analyzing morphological and fluid dynamics factors in the upper airway to improve prediction and diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) across normal weight, overweight, and OSA groups using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The study found that traditional morphological variables and body mass index (BMI) alone do not reliably distinguish OSA from overweight individuals, as significant differences were mainly observed between OSA and normal weight groups. A novel approach using breathing diagrams, which integrate pressure and flow data at the airway’s smallest cross-sectional area, showed promise in capturing distinctive breathing dynamics associated with OSA, suggesting potential as a more sensitive diagnostic tool. Limitations include a small sample size, lack of apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) data for non-OSA groups, and uniform boundary conditions rather than patient-specific breathing patterns.
