Abstract

This article focuses on the neuropsychiatric and cognitive correlates of pareidolias—visual illusions of meaningful objects—in individuals with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). In a study of 95 participants meeting 2017 McKeith criteria for probable DLB, pareidolias were found to be associated with greater presence of delusions, depression, and overall cognitive dysfunction, but not with visual hallucinations as previously expected. The findings suggest that pareidolias relate to broader neuropsychiatric symptoms beyond visual hallucinations in DLB. The authors propose that further research combining pareidolia assessment with psychiatric, cognitive, and neuroimaging measures could clarify its clinical utility in this population.
