Abstract
Tanjung Api-Api is a special economic zone in South Sumatra that is designed to accelerate the Indonesian national economic development. The developed and targeted area for development is mainly covered with mangrove forests, which is inhabited by various aquatic fauna. Here, we aim to survey the mollusk diversity of the mangrove forest in the Tanjung Api-Api area. The survey was carried out on 10 plots (10 x 10 m²). A total of 1,565 individual specimens were collected, consisting of 32 bivalves and 1,533 gastropods assigned to 17 families and 34 species (six Bivalvia and 28 Gastropoda). The molluscan community at 10 stations is highly varied. The average number of individuals was 157 specimens (ranging from 17-433), and the average number of species was 9.2 (ranging from 3-18). Two species, i.e. Neripteron cornucopia and N. violaceum, were widely distributed at nine stations. Fourteen (14) species are new records for the South Sumatra mangrove, and three species among them are new records for the Sumatra Island. The results of the study have updated the data on the number of species in South Sumatra - becoming 56 species, which was previously reported as only 41 species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
