Abstract

This article focuses on the systematics and taxonomy of the Neotropical deer tribe Odocoileini, specifically revising the genus Pudu, which includes two recognized species of dwarf deer. Through morphological and mitochondrial DNA analyses, the study reveals that the Northern pudu (Pudu mephistophiles) actually comprises two distinct species separated by the Huancabamba Depression in Peru. The authors describe a new species, Pudella carlae (Peruvian Yungas Pudu), endemic to the Peruvian Andes, and revalidate the genus Pudella to include both this new species and P. mephistophila, distinguishing them from the Southern pudu (Pudu puda). This taxonomic revision highlights underestimated species diversity within Odocoileini and calls for further phylogenetic and taxonomic studies to clarify relationships within this group.
