Effect of Combining Inspiratory Muscle Training with Deep Diaphragmatic Breathing Exercises on Diaphragm Excursion in Subjects with Multiple Sclerosis.

Abstract

This article focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of inspiratory muscle training (IMT) combined with deep diaphragmatic breathing exercises on respiratory function in subjects with multiple sclerosis (MS) who have mild to moderate disability. In a non-randomized trial involving 36 MS patients, the group receiving IMT plus breathing exercises showed significantly greater improvements in diaphragm excursion, maximal inspiratory pressure (Pimax), fatigue severity (measured by the Fatigue Severity Scale, FSS), and pulmonary dysfunction index (PDI) compared to the group receiving breathing exercises alone. These findings suggest that adding IMT to diaphragmatic breathing may enhance respiratory muscle strength and reduce fatigue in MS patients. The study notes limitations including small sample size and lack of randomization, recommending further research to confirm these results.
