Abstract
The article focuses on the recent increase in Great White Shark sightings along the New England coast, including areas featured in Steven Spielberg's 1975 film "Jaws." Data from the Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) and studies cited by the Associated Press and the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) indicate that shark populations are rising due to conservation efforts and warming sea temperatures, particularly in the Gulf of Maine. Despite heightened sightings and a rare fatal attack in Maine in 2020, shark attacks remain extremely uncommon, with the International Shark Attack File (ISAF) reporting a global decline in unprovoked bites in 2024. The article highlights ongoing monitoring and safety measures in response to these changes.
