Abstract

This article provides an overview of pre-conception counselling (PCC) for general practitioners (GPs) in the United Kingdom, focusing on optimizing health before pregnancy to improve outcomes for both parent and baby. It emphasizes addressing modifiable risk factors such as obesity, smoking, alcohol and drug use, medication review, vaccination status, and management of pre-existing medical and mental health conditions. The guidance highlights the importance of individualized, non-judgmental advice delivered as part of ongoing care, with referral to specialists when necessary. Additionally, thorough documentation of PCC discussions is stressed due to potential medico-legal implications.
