Abstract
The article examines the role of resistance in the formation and eventual decline of the ancient Zapotec state centered at Monte Albán in the Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico. It posits that resistance was a significant factor not only in the state's expansion but also in its fragmentation, suggesting that communities like Jalieza may have served as refuges for those opposing Monte Albán's authority. Preliminary findings from excavations at Jalieza indicate architectural features aligned with a "resistance orientation," supporting the hypothesis that this site was linked to a tradition of resistance against the expansionist state. The research highlights the importance of understanding resistance as a dynamic force in both ancient and modern state dynamics. [Extracted from the article]
