Abstract
The article focuses on the challenges and initiatives related to audiovisual (AV) archiving in the Global South, highlighting efforts by regional organizations and individuals to preserve and promote local audiovisual heritage. It features SEAPAVAA (Southeast Asian and Pacific Audiovisual Archive Association) members addressing issues such as climate impact, technological obsolescence, limited funding, and governmental obstacles. Examples include the Northeast India AV Archive's work digitizing magnetic tapes and preserving culturally significant films, Malaysia's Freedom Film Network's Arkib Filem Rakyat social justice archive supporting activism through documentary preservation, and the Philippines' Probe Archives developing an AV Archiving Essentials starter kit to assist emerging archives. The article underscores the need for greater collaboration and tailored support from the Global North to bridge the archival divide and safeguard diverse audiovisual legacies.
