Abstract

This article discusses a Maya jade heirloom that represents the tradition of reusing objects to honor the past. Maya kings used heirlooms, such as jade ornaments, to memorialize their ancestors. The article focuses on a specific jade vessel that was created in the city of Calakmul and later discovered in a tomb in the city of Tikal. The vessel was likely seized during a battle between the kings of Tikal and Calakmul and served as both a tribute to earlier rulers and a treasured heirloom. The vessel is seen as a representation of the ancestors' spirits and is referred to as a "chalice of souls." [Extracted from the article]
