Abstract

"Unmaking Migrants: Nigeria's Campaign to End Human Trafficking" by Stacey Vanderhurst is a critical ethnographic study that focuses on the National Agency for the Prohibition on Trafficking in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP) and its rehabilitation center in Lagos. Vanderhurst examines the global anti-trafficking apparatus and its impact on Nigerian women, particularly in relation to migration, transactional sex, and religious beliefs. The book argues that the practices of interception, detention, and rehabilitation aim to dissuade women from migrating and to morally reform them. While the book emphasizes local specificities, it also acknowledges the complicity of European and multinational entities in Nigeria's shadow economies. The ethnographic richness of the book supports critiques of the anti-trafficking apparatus as a form of subjection that targets marginalized women. [Extracted from the article]
