Abstract
The volume *Violence and Inequality: An Archaeological History*, edited by Thomas P. Leppard and Sarah C. Murray, explores the roles of violence and inequality in the formation and maintenance of prehistoric complex societies through archaeological evidence. The book presents diverse forms of violence beyond warfare, including state coercion, ritual violence, and structural violence, across regions such as the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Contributors emphasize how violence and inequality are embodied in human remains and burial practices, illustrating social hierarchies and state power. While focused on prehistoric contexts, the volume also draws parallels to contemporary forms of state-sanctioned violence and social inequality, making its insights relevant beyond archaeology.
