Abstract

This article focuses on Carrie Hill, a Mohawk basket maker from Akwesasne, New York, who creates intricate black ash and sweetgrass baskets under the name Chill Baskets. Hill’s work blends traditional Haudenosaunee weaving techniques with contemporary designs, reflecting the cultural significance of basketry as a practice connected to nature and community. Since becoming a full-time artist in 2014, she has exhibited her baskets nationally and internationally, including at U.S. Embassies and the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair & Market in Phoenix. Hill also teaches basketry workshops to share her skills with new generations. [Extracted from the article]
