Abstract

This article examines archaeological research conducted between 2016 and 2019 at KL Plaszow, a former Nazi German labour and concentration camp in Kraków, Poland, and its role in shaping the memorialisation and curatorial strategies of the site. It highlights the open-air exhibition "KL Plaszow: A Site After, a Site Without," which integrates archaeological findings with survivor testimonies and landscape features to present a multilayered narrative of the camp's history, its post-war transformation, and ongoing memory practices across generations. The study emphasizes the challenges and ethical considerations of archaeological methods at Holocaust sites, the evolving approaches to commemoration reflecting different generational needs, and the importance of preserving authentic traces within the campscape to foster personal and collective remembrance. The article situates KL Plaszow's memorialisation within broader social, political, and urban contexts, underscoring archaeology's contribution to understanding and experiencing Holocaust heritage beyond traditional historical narratives.
