Abstract

Researchers have discovered that desert landforms called yardangs can resemble seated lions, leading some to speculate that one of these formations may have been carved to create the Great Sphinx of Giza. The researchers found that sphinx-shaped yardangs can be formed when hand-sized globs of clay are subjected to consistent fluid flow and contain a mix of easily eroded and more resistant bits. By conducting experiments in a water tunnel, the team was able to reliably produce sphinxlike forms. The researchers are now working to mathematically model the whorling currents that shape these formations. [Extracted from the article]
