Abstract
This article focuses on Helen Ball's anthropological research into infant sleep, bed sharing, and breastfeeding, emphasizing the translation of academic findings into practical guidance for parents and healthcare professionals. Ball's work highlights the complex relationship between bed sharing and breastfeeding, demonstrating through observational and randomized controlled trials that bed sharing supports breastfeeding initiation and duration, particularly when mothers and babies remain physically close after birth. Her research also addresses safety concerns related to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), advocating for informed, evidence-based guidance on safe bed sharing rather than blanket prohibitions. Additionally, Ball has contributed to developing culturally sensitive sleep support programs, such as the UK-adapted Sleep Baby & You, to assist parents in managing infant sleep without undermining breastfeeding or maternal-infant bonding.
