Abstract
The article focuses on the Picuris Pueblo tribe's efforts to establish their ancestral connection to Chaco Canyon through a DNA study. Recognized by the federal government, the Picuris, a small community in northern New Mexico, have strong historical ties to the ancient site, which features multistory masonry structures built by Ancestral Puebloans. In collaboration with archaeologist Michael Adler and geneticist Eske Willerslev, the tribe analyzed the genomes of both ancient and living members, confirming a close genetic relationship to the inhabitants of Chaco Canyon. This scientific evidence, alongside their oral traditions, strengthens the tribe's claims regarding their heritage and connection to the historical site. [Extracted from the article]
